Redact Social Security Numbers from a PDF

100% client-side · no upload

Social Security numbers, tax identification numbers, and other government-issued identifiers must be protected when sharing documents. Even partial SSNs (xxx-xx-1234) can be sensitive depending on context. This tool lets you draw black-box redactions directly over any SSN or personal identifier on any page of a PDF, in your browser, without uploading the file.

The workflow is straightforward: load the PDF, navigate to the page where the SSN appears, and drag to draw a box over it. The tool renders the PDF page so you can see exactly where the number is. You can cover multiple instances across multiple pages in a single session.

When you click Redact & Download, pdf-lib applies solid black overlays over every marked region. The resulting PDF is safe to share — the SSN is permanently obscured in the document. No copy of your original document is stored anywhere during this process.

This approach is commonly used for IRS forms, tax returns, Social Security benefit letters, pay stubs, W-2 and 1099 forms, and any scanned document that contains personal identifiers.

常见问题

Does my PDF get uploaded?
No. All redaction happens locally in your browser using pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device.
Is the hidden content truly removed?
The tool overlays solid black rectangles on the PDF content. Standard PDF readers cannot see through them. For legally critical documents, verify the output and consult your legal team.
Does this work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Touch-drag works on the canvas to draw redaction areas. The tool runs in Safari and Chrome on mobile.
