Margin vs. markup — what is the difference?
Profit margin is calculated as profit divided by revenue: (Revenue − Cost) / Revenue × 100. A 40% margin means 40 cents of every dollar of revenue is profit.
Markup is profit expressed as a percentage of cost: (Revenue − Cost) / Cost × 100. A 67% markup means you charged 67% more than it cost you.
Common use cases
- Retail pricing: Set a selling price that hits your target margin.
- Service business: Verify that project revenue covers costs and leaves enough profit.
