Vintage Black & White Film Effect
Classic black and white film photography has a distinctive quality: grain, tonal curves that differ from digital sensors, and characteristic rendering of specific colour wavelengths based on film chemistry. Orthochromatic film made blue skies very dark; panchromatic film was more balanced — and each gave landscapes and portraits a unique look.
The luminosity algorithm in this tool produces the tonal response closest to classic panchromatic film: blue skies darken naturally, foliage appears lighter, and skin tones have a natural mid-grey quality. For the closest film approximation, use luminosity.
For a complete vintage treatment, convert to black and white here, then apply the Sepia filter at 20–40% intensity to add a subtle warm tone reminiscent of aged silver-gelatin prints. Both tools are browser-based with no upload required.
