Em dash vs en dash vs hyphen
A hyphen (-) joins compound words. An en dash (–)
spans ranges like "pages 10–20". An em dash (—) marks an abrupt break or
parenthetical aside — like this — and is the widest of the three. Most style guides prefer no spaces around
the em dash; some British publishers add a thin space on each side.
