Redact PDF on Mac Without Acrobat

100% client-side · no upload

Mac users often turn to Preview for basic PDF editing, but Preview does not support true redaction — it can add black shapes, but those shapes exist as separate annotation layers that can be removed in Acrobat or other editors. This browser tool writes solid black rectangles directly into the PDF content layer, which cannot be peeled off by toggling annotation visibility.

Open the tool in Safari or Chrome on your Mac, drop in your PDF, and draw redaction boxes over the sensitive areas. The tool renders each page with PDF.js so you can see the document content clearly. Use the Prev/Next buttons to navigate multi-page documents.

Click Redact & Download to apply the redactions using pdf-lib and save the result. The downloaded file is a standard PDF that opens correctly in Preview, Acrobat, Chrome, and any other reader on macOS.

No installation required. No monthly fee. The tool works on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs equally.

Preguntas frecuentes

Does my PDF get uploaded?
No. All redaction happens locally in your browser using pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device.
Is the hidden content truly removed?
The tool overlays solid black rectangles on the PDF content. Standard PDF readers cannot see through them. For legally critical documents, verify the output and consult your legal team.
Does this work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Touch-drag works on the canvas to draw redaction areas. The tool runs in Safari and Chrome on mobile.
