Keto supports weight loss through two mechanisms: a calorie deficit and reduced insulin from near-zero carbohydrate intake. The ketogenic state encourages the body to oxidise stored fat for fuel rather than dietary glucose, which can accelerate fat loss relative to a calorie-matched standard diet — particularly in the first 8–12 weeks. A deficit larger than 1,000 kcal is not recommended because it increases muscle loss and is difficult to sustain.
