Frequently Asked Questions
- What is HEIC format and why do iPhones use it?
- HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It compresses photos at roughly half the file size of JPEG with the same visual quality. iPhones default to HEIC to save storage, but many non-Apple apps cannot open HEIC files without extra software.
- Does my HEIC file get uploaded to a server?
- No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using the heic2any JavaScript library. Your photos never leave your device — no upload, no server, no account required.
- Why can't Windows open HEIC files directly?
- Windows does not include HEIC support by default. Converting to JPG is the fastest cross-platform fix — the resulting file opens in every viewer without extra software.
- What quality setting should I use?
- The default 90% is visually indistinguishable from the original for most photos. Use 95–100% for archival copies. Use 70–80% for email or social media where file size matters more.
- Can I convert HEIF files too?
- Yes. HEIF (.heif) and HEIC (.heic) are closely related — HEIC is Apple's implementation of HEIF. Both are fully supported by this converter.
